PTG members Daniel Mira and Shubham attended the 15th European Conference on Industrial Furnaces and Boilers (INFUB) held in Porto (Portugal) from 7 to 10 April 2026.

During the conference, Shubham  presented his work on a reduced-order Chemical Reactor Network (CRN) surrogate model for industrial steel reheating furnaces, made in the context of the European TWINGHY project. These ones are prime candidates for decarbonization through hydrogen blending, although analyzing how new fuels affect their performance and emissions is prohibitely expensive using computations or experiments. In his talk, Shubham showed how CRNs can represent the furnace as zero-dimensional reactors trained with Machine Learning tools on known conditions, and tested on unseen conditions to evaluate the impact of new fuels with low cost and high physical consistency.

This activity shows how computational tools can be developed and used to contribute towards decarbonization of the industrial sector, which aligns with the goals of PTG.
