PTG Participation in BATSS webinar

The PTG researcher Arash Moaven, from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, participated in the BATSS webinar Modelling & Simulation Approaches for Battery Pack Design Optimisation, held on 24 March 2026 within the EU-INGENIOuS cluster. The webinar brought together several European projects to discuss modelling challenges and validation strategies for advanced  battery technologies.

During the webinar, which can be found in this link, Arash presented BSC’s work in the NEXTBAT project on high-fidelity CFD simulations for the Prototype 2 battery module, focusing on immersion cooling and early venting thermal runaway. Using Alya, BSC’s in-house HPC-ready multiphysics CFD code, the PTG team studies thermal behaviour, pressure drop, channel flow distribution, and heat transfer for immersion cooling, as well as pressure rise during venting and gas-oil flow behaviour.

The presentation was structured in two main parts: key aspects to be modelled and simulated, and how these approaches are validated. The simulation results provide engineering indicators to support design decisions and to complement low-fidelity models used by project partners.

Together, these activities show how BSC’s high-fidelity simulation work in NEXTBAT supports validation and practical engineering decisions for safer and better-informed battery module design.
